I've been privileges to have a really varied career: from standing on the Afghan-Pakistan border in the middle of Ramadan, to leading soldiers through untracked snow in the Canadian backcountry, to sailing in the Atlantic.
I love the outdoors, and the mountains in particular, and hope to be able to share this passion
I grew up in the North West of England. My father had been to school in the Lake District, and loved it ever since. Growing up we spent a lot of time in the Lakes. Whilst at Sixth Form, once me and my friends had our driving licences, on more than one occasion we absented ourselves for an unofficial field trip to Snowdonia or the Lakes! When I went to University, I joined the Officer's Training Corps and found out that I could get paid to spend time in the mountains - I never looked back!
I joined Sheffield University Officer's Training Corps on my 19th birthday. Whilst at University, I got to enjoy mountaineering and skiing through the military - it was brilliant! After Commissioning as an officer in the Army, I completed the military Mountain Leader course. On my return from my first tour of Afghanistan I spent month in Canada to qualify as a Canadian Ski Instructor Alliance Instructor. I went on to gain the corresponding military alpine ski instructor's qualification, and the military Ski Touring Leader's qualification as well.
On my last tour of Afghanistan, two the discs in my lower spine collapsed - embarrassingly whilst I was on a treadmill! Although it took over 2 years to happen, that was the end of my military career. Whilst I didn't ski or mountaineer for quite a long time after that, I dd get to complete my RYA YachtMaster Coastal Certificate of Competence as part of my resettlement.
Now a father, with a young daughter who loves the mountains, I "re-trod" the Mountain Leader qualification route via the civilian Mountain Training Association to gain my Mountain Leader (Summer) qualification, so I could share my love of the mountains not only with my family but with others as well.
I've got decades of experience in the mountains of England and Wales, as well as in the Canadian Rockies and European Alps. Weather leading soldiers, friends or my own family I'm passionate about sharing my love of the outdoors with others and hope to be able to share the with you!
